In 1372, John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster became the owner of the Manor of Aylsham.
St Boltoph's is a part-thatched 15th century church with some original wall paintings and the only decorative hammer beam roof in this eight church benefice.
Banningham, Norfolk
A pleasant church whose great tower is one of the tallest in the region. It rises in four stages surmounted by a parapet.Rebuillt in the late 14th century it was again modified in the 17th century to aid stability of the chancel by installation of a substantial beam.
The characterful interior boasts box pews for the gentry either side of the central benches for socially lesser worshippers. Memorably are the fragments of medieval glass restored and set into a south window. Elsewhere is 1850s glass made in the workshop at Costessey. There are partial wall paintings of St Christopher and St George slaying a dragon. Both of these wall paintings have lost their top third due installation of a clerestory long before desecrations of the Reformaiion.
