St John the Divine
Rastrick, Yorkshire
The church of St John the Divine was planted as a daughter church of St Matthew, Rastrick around 90 years ago.
We have come full circle - built as a place of worship in 1822, returned to a place of worship in 2025.
Elland, Yorkshire
Built as a Congregational Church in 1822, Providence Chapel had a period of time in recent years of being used for other activities, (Citizens Advice Bureau and a Chapel of Rest), only recently being renovated and returned to being used as a place of worship.
On entering the grounds one passes through a pair of listed stone gate piers. Externally the chapel features a small garden of remembrance which is in current use, with the rest of the courtyard being flagged with grave stones dating back to the early 19th century, each contributing a small part to the history of Elland over centuries. It provides a fascinating insight into families that can be traced through the generations. This area is very peaceful and a lovely place for quiet and reflection.
The front aspect of the building is typical of a chapel of its time with its pedimented, three-bay facade, and a central entrance in a round arched recess in the style of a beautiful Greek Doric columned porch.
The interior of the building has a space for worship which holds about 200 people, and although the pews were removed historically, the space has been sympathetically restored within the constraints of current legislation to provide a calm and peaceful space. The original pulpit remains in the worship area as a reminder of the original purpose of the building. Crumbling facades and decoration have been restored.
Phase two of the restorations will involve renovating the lower ground floor into a community space with kitchens and toilets, and will house a weekly cafe and many other events to serve the community.
