The church of St John the Baptist, Halifax was granted its Minster status in 2009 in recognition of its important role in the civic life of the town and borough.

The Minster has a monastic foundation, being built by Cluniac monks in the 12th century. The present structure can be traced to 1438. The Grade I listed building has exceptional woodwork with a 15th century carved font cover and painted ceiling panels representing the coats of arms of vicars, local families and the twelve tribes of Israel. The original box pews date from the 1630s and were modified with much of the interior by Gilbert Scott in 1878 restoration.

The ancient stones have stood for over 900 years bearing witness to the story of the people of this region and a testimony to their Christian faith. With our medieval font cap, stunning prize winning Victorian east window, 18th century marigold window, unique Reformation box pews, Commonwealth period windows (a rare survival) and monuments to the rich and the poor, industrialists and beggars.

oday, Halifax Minster continues as a place of community worship and prayer, of civic engagement, culture and education. The Minster is a great place to start a visit to Halifax and its many attractions. A short walk from train and bus stations and an easy stroll from Eureka Childrens Museum, The Square Chapel, the unique Piece Hall and much more it makes sense to start your tour of the town with us.
