Limekilns Parish Church

Limekilns Church is a former Secession Church, and its construction in 1824-25 has recently been commemorated. It replaced the original Secessionist Church building dating from 1785. In 1820 the majority of the congregations reunited as the United Secession Church. They then built a substantial number of new places of worship in a classical 'style' but Limekilns Church is, unusually, a 'flat classical' example. 

It has a Jacobean-style pulpit dating from 1883. It retains the original U-plan balcony, and was the subject of extensive external repairs and internal reordering in the period 2012-15, providing new disabled access and individual seating, greatly assisted by the Earl of Elgin, who lives nearby. Removal of the pews has permitted much more extensive use of the interior, and it is now a much used village facility, with activities on every day. Many visitors to the village simply "drop in". There is a hard working congregation and a considerable number of supporters. The sanctuary includes the memorials to former ministers - Limekilns is unusual in having had only 12 ministers since 1782. The congregation is looking forward to the challenges of the third century of the building as the place of worship.
