Petton, Shropshire
Petton church is on an old Motte and Bailey site, with views to Staffordshire, the Wrekin and South Shropshire hills.
The present brick building dates to 1727, but it's plain exterior belies its fascinating interior. Many of its features have been 'recycled'. The Jacobean pulpit and reredos came from Wrexham parish church, the ornate pillars by the gallery are from the Shrewsbury Council House and the vestry door is from Shrewsbury Abbey. The box pews and panelling have been 'made to fit'.
The beautiful painted glass windows are unique to Petton and were made by the Victorian London based firm of Ward & Hughes.
In 2000 the church was dedicated to St Raphael, the Archangel and St Isidore, the farm labourer. It previously had no dedication.
The church is open every day. Services are held twice a month. There is an eco loo in the churchyard.
