St Edmund or St James is the only church in the country with 'or' in its title.
The church dates back to the 12th century, with aisles added in the 15th century. There is a splendid stone screen between the chancel and the vestry, which was formally a chantry chapel. The tower is the oldest part of the Church. The internal and external arches are both Norman, dating perhaps from the 12th century. There are also two Norman windows which are visible only from inside the tower on the ground floor. Apart from these features, the appearance of the tower dates from the 16th century
The church was reordered by the Victorians in 1862, with oak pews added and an organ installed. The organ pipes have now been refurbished to their original colours.
Two former rectors of the church are of international importance. George Joye was one of the people who risked his life translating the Bible into English during the Reformation. He fled abroad, only returning when it was safe. John Donne, celebrated English poet, was the other Rector here and donated a chalice and pattern to the church. These are now in St Alban’s Abbey on display. There is a new window at the church that celebrates the poet and the church’s connection with him.
This medieval church has many memorials and a fine 19th century organ. Norman architecture is evident in the west end.
