How to get here

The church is two miles southwest of Monmouth on the minor road between Monmouth and Raglan. The church carpark is on the right, just by a pedestrian crossing, when travelling from Monmouth. There is a bus stop outside the church.

St Michael & All Angels, in the centre of Mitchel Troy village dates from 1208 and has an interesting history. Once used as a stable for General Fairfax’s siege of Raglan Castle. It was restored in the 1870’s and benefits from modern seating and facilities installed in 2022.

St Michael's has a relaxed variety of styles of worship and traditional worship and is open during daylight hours for viewing and for private prayer. The church is part of the Monmouth Marches Ministry Area of churches in north-east Monmouthshire.

It was founded in 1208 with 14th century nave arcades, chancel arch and porch and a Norman font. Listed as Grade II*, it incorporates a significant amount of medieval fabric and a richly detailed Victorian interior resulting from the patronage of the Beaufort estate. Adam of Usk was vicar from 1382-1385. In 1646, during the siege of Raglan Castle General Fairfax's men stabled their horses in the church, the rector was replaced by John Hardwicke, Preacher who held services in the boarded off chancel.. Nathaniel, son of the first black Sheriff of Monmouthshire, was baptised here. Reverend Thomas Webb, astronomer is buried here.
