Isle of Islay
Western Isles
PA43 7JD

Also known as 'The Round Church', this unusual 18th century church was commissioned in 1767 by the laird, Daniel Campbell of Shawfield and Islay, with a bow fronted pew for his family.

According to lore, the circular form of the church was meant to allow 'no corner for the Devil to hide'.

Inside the fascinating supporting structure of a sturdy central beam measuring 19in (48cm), with eight principal spokes jointed into it, is left exposed.
