Of all the churches in southeast Cornwall, St Tallan contains perhaps the most surprises.

Built of brick, it has the worship area on the upper floor, reached by a flight of six external stone steps, under a portico with a roof supported on stone pillars.

With its origins as a Saxon chapel, the church we see today with its 12th century cancel, is constructed of one building inside another, joined only at the windows.

A low, simple building in a large round churchyard, St Margaret's, as it stands today, dates from the 14th century, but there was almost certainly a much earlier church here.

Cwm hir was founded in the 12th century as a daughter house to Whitland but all that remains is the ruined 12th century nave.

St John's church, Doddington sits at around 1000ft on the side of Titterstone Clee Hill, with stunning views to Worcestershire and Wales.

A small chapel dedicated to the unusual St Hulanus or Ulette, which was probably built before the medieval castle and constructed on top of the ruins of the Dark Age settlement.

Set in quiet countryside close to the River Arrow, Studley's church has a history dating back to the 12th century, and parts of that original building can be seen in the north wall.

You can spot this church from miles away although it lies in the Cherwell Valley, its spire, dating from around 1370 is both the most beautiful and tallest in the county at 60 metres high.

Gorgeous church with an Anglo-Saxon name beside an ancient Holy Well and huge Celtic Cross attest to over a millennia of worship.

Built in 1867 the building is one of Frederick Preedy's more unusual and elaborately detailed designs and the plan and decoration of the chancel are particularly noteworthy.

This is the only church anywhere dedicated to St Meubred. It has one of the best churchyard crosses in the country, 9th century with knot work scrolls, ring chain and plait work. You can also find our fascinating carved medieval bench ends.
