A remarkable church, its rather drab exterior hides a beautiful interior, with high vaulted apses, beautiful stained glass windows and numerous memorials, including the WW2 memorial for the fallen from Ely.

St James stands as a gateway to the village of Burton Lazars, which it has served since the 11th century.

St Teilo's church is believed to have been built during the late 12th or 13th century on the site of an earlier Celtic church, over the ensuing centuries the building was altered and extended.

Probably first built as a barn during the mid 18th century, the building was acquired in 1777 by the Unitarians for use as a meeting house or chapel.

The foundation stone of this high Victorian church was laid in October 1882, it was designed by William Knight, the architect of St Andrew’s Church, Mansfield Road, Nottingham.

People have been worshipping in this wonderfully preserved church for 900 and on a site chosen by the Breton missionaries, Mael and Sulien, who came here in the 6th century as Christian missionaries.

The first recorded reference to a church in Bulwell is in 1171, however there is a strong tradition which suggests that up to four different churches have stood on this same hill since Saxon times.
