In 1898 the Diocese of Menevia was established, and the gothic style Roman Catholic parish church of St Mary became the procathedral, later the cathedral.

The church is the early 12th century and the subterranean charnel chapel houses one of only two remaining in situ medieval ossuaries (collections of human bones) in England.

One of the earliest Christian sites in Britain, Dorchester Abbey stands on the site of a 7th century Saxon cathedral.

Another Grade I church, it was primarily built by John Stokys whose brass and that of his wife of 1498 are to be found in the north aisle.
