St James the Great, dating from the 15th century, sits in the historic village of Ince which is listed in the Domesday Book.

Our beautiful church is known as Barnsley’s 'hidden gem' (as described by John Betjeman).

The present church is the third built in the village. An old ruined chapel, thought to have been sited near Pule Hill, was recorded in 1650.

Offering a welcome from the edge of the Peak District; designed in 1830 by RD Chantrell with a plainly dcorated nave and raised galleries.

When it opened its doors in 1904 it was declared to be ‘a church built by miners for the miners’.

The church is a ‘noble edifice in the early English style of Gothic architecture’from which the view is beautiful, over Worsbrough reservoir to Wortley, Stainborough Park and Worsbrough Park.

On the outside, a fine medieval church with a broach spire and on the inside, a complete Victorian Gothic interior by GF Bodley with beautifully decorated ceilings throughout the church.

A small Gothic Revival design of the turn of the 20th century, built for Anglican worship and acquired for Roman Catholic use in the 1970s.
