Two unusual 17th century monuments should be enough to encourage a trip to this remote village adjacent to the borders of Huntingdonshire.

Ancient and quietly awe inspiring in its simplicity; the remote location, the silence inside, the slight smell of damp and the obvious centuries of use speak of a village that has retained its identity for many generations.

This church has strong American associations as during the Second World War some 6,000 men and women of the 351st Heavy Bombardment Group Eight, United States Army Airforce, was stationed at the newly created Polebrook Airbase.

The whole church is, in a way, a memorial to the Watts Russell family whose seat is at nearby Biggin Hall.

Norton was once the first parish in Derbyshire encountered by Sheffielders on the road south, just imagine the London coach toiling up Derbyshire Lane! Seen from Graves Park it still appears in a rural setting.

The church was built about 1650 and was adjacent to Sir Edward Rodes’s home, ‘The Old Hall’, and used for worship by his family and tenants of his land.
