The church was consecrated in 1912 by the Bishop of Manchester, and due to it's location was dubbed 'The Church on the Cliffs' by the first People's Warden.

The early history of church life in Hampsthwaite is far from clear and is to some extent based on supposition.

The church is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. A church of some kind has stood here on this site for over 1,000 years.

Although there is mention of a church in Barnby Dun in the Domesday Book, the present building is mainly 14th century, although the tower is 13th century.

There are no known records of a church before 1087, but Braegesheale is mentioned in an endowment charter dated 1002 of the Abbey of Burton.

The present church was opened in 1838 for use as a Chapel of Ease within the Parish of Greasley.

One of the most unusual features of St Nicholas's church is six huge pairs of painted reindeer antlers hanging in the north chapel.
