Outside the curtain wall of his 12th century castle, Bishop Roger of Salisbury built a Norman church to be used by his tenants and retainers.

The church has a 13th century chancel but the whole of the rest of the church is, unusually, the product of one building campaign, of about 1470, and is fashionably embattled.

Known as one of the best country churches in Somerset and is often called the Cathedral of the Levels.
