Find a church

The core of the present church, one of the best surviving Anglo Saxon buildings in West Yorkshire, was built about 1200 years ago, and much remains of the tall narrow Saxon nave and tower.

Little is known about the early history of the church.

Although there has been a church on this site for over 600 years, the building has been altered several times and what you see today is essentially a 14th century tower with a Victorian nave and apse.

The church building occupies a dominant site in the village.

It is believed that St Wilfrid's history goes right back to its foundation by St Wilfrid of Ripon before 700AD.

During the reign of Henry II, the church was given to the priory of Thurgarten.

The church sits on a commanding hill and is visible from a considerable distance.

This elegant Early English style church was built in 1843 of local stone paid for by Sir Stephen Glynne.

On the outside, a fine medieval church with a broach spire and on the inside, a complete Victorian Gothic interior by GF Bodley with beautifully decorated ceilings throughout the church.

St Katherine’s church has been known to exist since around 1208, but it is likely that the nearby well indicates that there has been a place of worship at Loversall for millennia.

We are sited at the top of the hill in Huthwaite and have a beautiful building that is over 120 years old.

It is known that the church occupies the same site as the Roman fort of Danum.
