A country gem from a gentler era.

The bridge chapel at Rochester was built by Sir John de Cobham, who lived at nearby Cooling Castle.

After falling into disrepair St Mary's was rebuilt in 1879 by the Earl of Portsmouth. Its Norman roots can be found in the arch above the south porch and the small chancel window.

The churchyard has something of the character of a village green because of the array of cottages that overlook it, including Margaret Cottages, once the parish workhouse.

St Peter's is one of two adjoining rival Saxon churches beautifully positioned in this private village consisting of a castle, hall and estate cottages.

St Giles is a grand 19th century estate church, rebuilt by the Cazalets of Fairlawne in 1881 and expensively fitted out.

A place of inspiring worship, prayer and teaching.

Built in 1860 to an Athony Salvin design the building replaced the earlier church dating to 1169.

The Cathedral has been a place of Christian worship since 604AD where everyone is welcome to visit to take part in our services, admire our treasures and learn more of our stories.

It is difficult to accurately date the church's foundation or the present building but It is certainly ancient and parts of a moat remain which once enclosed a good five acres including both the church and adjacent East Mersea Hall.

Tillingham's grassy square is lined with weather boarded cottages and a pub with the church sitting back a little to become an integral part of the village scene.
