Cited as 'a Norman cathedral in miniature’ by Simon Jenkins, this fine Norman church is all that remains of the original 12th century Hospital.

Built in the 1850s within part of the county jail, the building was rearranged internally in 1990 to create a light filled sanctuary upstairs and community premises downstairs.

The church was originally built in 1647 but virtually rebuilt in 1882 by the architect Edward Witts.

We are pleased to welcome you to this Grade II listed chapel only five minutes walk from the site of the Ironage Hillfort on Wincobank Hill.

St Mary's church came into being as a direct result of the coming of the railway to Windermere, just a short walk downhill from the Railway Station and in view of the Lake and magnificent fells.

In the late 1200s the Archbishop of Canterbury established a college here for a master and six canons (priests), which accounts for the large size of this church, and also accounts for the timber framed houses opposite, which were where the master and his canons lived.

Interesting Georgian church to a design by Ignatius Bench in 1823 and reordered to ecclesiastical principles in 1894.
