Find a church

Situated in the beautiful valley of Dentdale, Cumbria yet within the boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this Grade II building was originally built as a meeting house by the Society of Friends in 1701.

A truly outstanding example of early Gothic architecture which was once one of the greatest monasteries in England and the inspiration for the design of church buildings throughout the north.

Our church was founded in 1190 and is probably the oldest Roman Catholic Church still in use in England.

The building was erected in 1811 to a design by the Revd William Jenkins, one of John Wesley’s itinerant preachers who combined preaching with chapel design.

Above the porch door is a chiro stone lozenge found on site in the 1860s which dates from 350-400AD, the Christian faith has been here for more than 1600 years!

This chapel was built in 1864 and extended in 1884.

Situated in the centre of Slingsby village just off the village green with its ancient maypole and surrounded by lime trees.

Cowgill church is a welcoming haven for walkers, cyclists and other visitors, sitting on the Dales Way in the the Yorkshire Dales National Park just a mile from the Settle Carlisle Railway and Dent Station.

A local landmark, the church is set on the end of a limestone ridge at the gateway to the Lake District National Park with beautiful views across the Kent Estuary to Morecambe Bay.

A beautiful church of 12th century origins with 18th and 19th century discoveries while excavating the churchyard indicates likely Anglo Saxon foundations, the surrounding conservation churchyard, is a peaceful haven for people and wildlife.

A treat for the senses, boasting some of the finest Romanesque carvings to be found in a Norman church.
