12th century Norman church, built with stones from Hadrian’s Wall and where King Edward I (Longshanks) lay in state in the church for ten days in 1307.

Built in 1860 to an Athony Salvin design the building replaced the earlier church dating to 1169.

Described as 'more curious than beautiful' by Nikolaus Pevsner in his book 'Buildings of England, 1954' the church is indeed full of interest and mystery.
