The church stands high on the hillside above the Avon meadows.

Situated prominently in the heart of the village, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, St Mary’s is the only church actually on the course of Hadrian's Wall.

It is known that the present church on the island dates back to the 1400s but it is not known who built the church and why.
