There has been a church on this site since Saxon times; much of the present configuration and appearance dates from the mid 19th century.

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was engaged as architect and it was considered the most important Catholic Church in England when it was built from 1839, seating about 3,000 people. 

The parish church of West Ham was established in 1135 and rebuilt in Early English Style in the reign of Henry II (1154-89).

St Paul's Bow Common is the most famous and significant parish church to be built in Britain in the latter half of the 20th century.

Historical documents refer to St Peter's as a Royal Chapel as early as the 12th century, today it is a Chapel Royal and Royal Peculiar; directly under the jurisdiction of The Queen.

St George the Martyr is a vibrant and inclusive church having been at the heart of its community for over nine hundred years.

A strong and magnificent pile which commands the attention of all judicious observers, built and fitted out between 1714 and 1729, St George in the East was one of fifty new churches planned for London, although only twelve were completed.

The former church St Mary at the Walls (now Colchester Arts Centre) is built against the Roman Walls and overlooking the south western corner of the old walled town of Colchester.

St Swithun's is a beautiful ancient church, one of smallest in the country which has been a centre of worship for 900 years.
