St Mary's stands on high ground above its very pretty village, which prospered during the late medieval cloth making boom.

This pretty timber framed church stands to the west of the village of Great Altcar, it has been described by Pevsner as 'an utterly charming church'.

Tucked away in one of the most remote villages in Suffolk, Shelley church is hard to find but worth finding!

St John's has an unusual looking exterior as it has a slim tower in comparison to the nave.

The church is mentioned in Domesday Book.

In the late 1200s the Archbishop of Canterbury established a college here for a master and six canons (priests), which accounts for the large size of this church, and also accounts for the timber framed houses opposite, which were where the master and his canons lived.

A 15th century church of great architectural interest with exceptional flint flushwork, magnificent double hammer-beam roof with original colouring, wealth of furnishings 1850-1930 and ‘River of Life’ reredos 2014.
