The origins of Upper Chapel begin in 1630 with a building erected by Anglicans and Presbyterians followed by the appointment in 1660 of the first Congregational Minister.

West of the River Rother, St Michaels spire is a landmark from across the Romney Marshes.

Architect John Coates Carter is a well kept secret, his buildings embody the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th century and St Paul's is said to be the finest of his surviving early churches.

With its ancient stone cross carved by Anglo-Saxon and Viking sculptors, its Norman arch and medieval font and stained glass windows, the church spans a millennium; cross the threshold and feel yourself stepping back in time.

We are a small 'Chapel in the Fields' church and are 300 years old this year, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and stunning views.

St Paul's is the original parish church of Shipley, built in 1826.
