Situated in the valley beside the river Nadder, there has been a church here serving as a centre for Christian worship for at least a thousand years and it is believed that the first church may have been built soon after the founding of Shaftesbury Abbey in about 875.

Outstandingly rich, colourful and layered with history, the chapel’s vaulted ceiling was installed by Henry VIII in the 1530s and is the grand culmination of Tudor opulence at Hampton Court.

St George's Bloomsbury, the work of Nicholas Hawksmoor, is one of the finest Baroque churches in London and indeed has been described as ‘one of the capital’s most wonderful buildings’.

St James’s church, built by Sir Christopher Wren, was consecrated in 1684, towards the end of the most turbulent century in England’s religious history.

This tiny medieval church in a good hillside setting is entered through a farmyard.

This church was consecrated by the Bishop of London on St Luke’s Day, 18th October 1824 and was built because the original parish church (now known as Chelsea Old Church) was regarded as too small for the increasing population.

It is difficult to believe that this beautiful and well cared for church was neglected for many years.

Corfiato’s church is important as an advanced design showing the influence of the Liturgical Movement, and as a showcase of Art Sacré, notably the murals in the Lady Chapel by Jean Cocteau.

Sited in a scenic location in the Yorkshire Dales, with a view up the Stainmore pass through the high Pennines, it sits almost equidistant between the market towns of Barnard Castle and Richmond; at the heart of the community of Hutton Magna.

Set close to Bowes Castle and surrounded by trees the small, low church, dating from the 12th century is easy to miss, but is well worth a visit.
