Find a church

Whilst it is probable that a wooden Saxon church existed on the site of the present church, we can say for certain that in the 11th and 12th centuries there was a Norman church, built of clunch and rubble intermixed with Roman tiles.

During the reign of Henry II, the church was given to the priory of Thurgarten.

Winchelsea was built as a new, planned, town in 1288 after the old town was destroyed by the sea and the church was given a large and prestigious plot within a very large churchyard.

St Wulfram's slender and graceful spire, distinctively flanked by its four spirelets, would very likely have been the tallest in England when it was built in 1280-1300, and it is still one of the most elegant.

St Peter’s was built in 1964-65 to serve an area of new housing on the edge of Sheffield.

The Abbey and grounds were given to the people of Sheffield in 1932 and there is much to see for everyone who enjoys history and the peace of the countryside.

Dates from the 13th century and is thought to have replaced an earlier Saxon preaching cross, the remains of which are preserved in a glass case in the south transept.

The church probably dates back to the 12th century and the two especially interesting architectural features are the tower and south porch.
