Ashby is a remote hamlet and its medieval church of St Andrew is approached across a farmyard. The churchyard affords fabulous views across the Wolds.

Situated in the valley beside the river Nadder, there has been a church here serving as a centre for Christian worship for at least a thousand years and it is believed that the first church may have been built soon after the founding of Shaftesbury Abbey in about 875.

Like so many Somerset churches, Isle Abbots has a splendid tower, and this one is especially graceful, built of Ham stone between 1510 and 1520, with three distinct stages.

The base of St Wendreda's tower stands right on the edge of the street; there is a walkway under the tower so that you do not have to step into the road to walk around the building.

One of two built locally by John Dickinson, the papermaker, in 1849, the other is St Mary's only a mile or so away in Apsley.

Always open to visitors, St Martin's is a peaceful, numinous church where people come to meditate and be refreshed.
