From the very early days of its origins and starting to build just after the turn of the 20th century, through to its completion in 1978, the story of this great cathedral, the largest in the UK and the fifth largest in the world, is unique and fascinating.

This impressive stone built church perches atop War Hill, the site of a battle between invading Normans and the local Saxons, it is believed that those killed were buried here and a place of worship established.

Described as 'more curious than beautiful' by Nikolaus Pevsner in his book 'Buildings of England, 1954' the church is indeed full of interest and mystery.

Dating from Norman times, our church will give you a sense of the history of the area whose name derives from ‘Anastan’ a solitary stone and is known to have had prehistoric settlements in the area.

The story of the church, originally known as Trinity Presbyterian Church begins with an inspired Victorian gentleman named Samuel Stitt.

St Mary's is a grade II listed building with plenty of interesting features including an internal baptistry pool, beautiful stained glass windows, balcony historically used by fisherman and very important links to the last invasion of Britain in 1797.
