The church, built between 1915-16, was founded by Augustinian priors and continues to be served by the order from the neighbouring priory.

St Cuthbert’s is one of London’s largest and finest 19th century churches, it rises dramatically amongst the Victorian terraces of Philbeach Gardens, forming a group with the adjacent clergy house and Philbeach Hall.

A tower dating from the 14th century, a 15th century wall painting, a monument to knight who fought at the battle of Bosworth, a Robert Adam font, a Joseph Nollekans monument and beautiful stained glass.

The church of St Mary the Virgin sits right at the heart of the Kirkby Lonsdale community; as well as it being a place of regular worship it is a significant visitor attraction and runs many art and cultural events.

The Grade I listed building by Thomas Archer is of the highest quality and is to be compared with other 18th century churches in the City, West End and Greenwich.

This church was consecrated by the Bishop of London on St Luke’s Day, 18th October 1824 and was built because the original parish church (now known as Chelsea Old Church) was regarded as too small for the increasing population.
