Situated on rising ground, the church is a spacious cruciform stone building.

A particularly important church building of more than special interest architecturally, designed by George Fellowes-Prynne, and consecrated in 1893.

The church was formerly a chapelry of the parish of Hartland and was one of the properties given to support Hartland Abbey at the time of Richard I.

The whole church is, in a way, a memorial to the Watts Russell family whose seat is at nearby Biggin Hall.

St Thomas a Becket church is mentioned in the Domesday Book and dates from the 12th century which leads many to believe that the church was probably redecated to Thomas a Beckett at a later date.

Claimed to date back to around 520AD, the present tower was built in the 13th century, and most of the body of the church was rebuilt in the 19th century.

St Catherine's church is an important survival from the 12th century, associated with the first church established by St Cedd.
