Despite its sudden expansion in the 1950s with the arrival of the car industry, Leyland remains a pleasant Lancashire town of Victorian terraced cottages and suburban greenery.

The church was founded in 1894 to serve the growing and close-knit population in the area, serving the people who worked in the local industries, which included coal mining, the gas works, the brickworks and the BICC (British Insulated Callender Cables).

St Augustine’s promises a warm welcome to all visitors, whether they are looking in on their parish church or have a special interest in stained glass.

Located in an attractive conservation area and arguably the most prominent of all the buildings, St John's was built between 1851 and 1853 and listed for its architectural and historic merits.

St Saviour’s is the memorial church to Parkin Jeffcock, a mining engineer who was killed during rescue operations after the Oaks Colliery Disaster in 1866.

The earliest reference to a church is from 1141 although it is probable that one existed here well before the Norman Conquest.

The Abbey and grounds were given to the people of Sheffield in 1932 and there is much to see for everyone who enjoys history and the peace of the countryside.

Visitors to Holy Rood are often caught quite unawares by their first sight of the interior where a wealth of brick, marble and wood, convey a sense of splendour and dignity, in direct contrast to the exterior which is plain and almost unadorned.

The church was designed by Basil Spence, the architect of Coventry Cathedral, and was consecrated on the Eve of the Conversion of St Paul, January 24 1959.
