The old church at Mereworth was found to spoil the view of John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland, from his splendid new Palladian house, so he demolished it (he had already done away with the old castle and the village) and built a new classical church, and a new village, nearby.

This Victorian church was designed by Alfred Waterhouse (who designed the Natural History Museum) and is an architectural gem, reflecting the Arts & Crafts movement and the Oxford movement, set in a pastoral scene.

St Mary church was built c1200 in the Early English style and still has on one of the original window sills scroll work from this era.
