St George's has changed little since 1763, when it was established in the immigrant neighbourhood of Whitechapel by German refugees seeking religious asylum in London and working mainly in the sugar trade.

St Rhian’s sits within a polygonal churchyard, at the centre of what was a farmyard complex.

Whilst the tower is medieval the church was so rebuilt in the 17th and 18th century that that is its overriding appearance.
