Find a church

The church was built as a Congregational Church on the initiative of a local resident, Benjamin Scott, Chamberlain of the City of London, in 1864-5.

In the quiet village of Whichford, nestled in the rolling hills of south Warwickshire and located in the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The first mention of a place of worship in Ashford is given in a record in the reign of King Edward I, dated 1293 and granting a dispensation of taxes during the time of the Crusades.

Here is a large town church that speaks of the 15th century. In 1483 Edward V, the husband of Elizabeth Woodville of nearby Grafton Regis, gave a large grant of stone from the royal quarries nearby in Whittlebury.

This redundant 14th century church is now cared for by the St Michael's Betws y Coed Trust and welcomes visitors from all over the world.

In the bustling mountain gateway to Snowdonia, St Mary's continues the tradition of a 'prayer house in the wood' (betws y coed).

There are two distinct reasons for coming here. The rare medieval wooden effigies and the association with the great nonconformist missionary William Carey (1761–1834).

St Michael’s church is in the parish of Stowe Nine Churches, originally simply Stowe meaning ‘Christian Holy Place’.
