The present church at South Bersted dates back to 1405, when it was consecrated and dedicated by the Bishop Reade of Chichester before a large congregation.

On a site of Christian worship for over a thousand years, the present building (1724) was rebuilt after an altercation in 1646 between the King's men and the Parliamentarians.

The earliest part of St Michael's is the 12th century nave.

As one of the only Queen Anne style churches left in Birmingham, the church was founded by Job Marston, a local philanthropist, has a rich and varied history.
