Christ Church was consecrated in 1863 having been formed from parts of neighbouring parishes in response to the rapid population growth from the newly constructed railway and subsequent flourishing tourism industry. The church had several structural developments within a short period of time and many benefactors donated a diverse range of stained glass.

The building still functions as a centre for public worship in the town and is open daily for private prayer and visitors.
