The church is Grade II* listed.   The nave and chancel are 12th century, and the church was greatly extended in 1854.

The church is Grade II* listed.   Samuel Harsnett, a future Archbishop of York, was vicar of Chigwell from 1597 to 1605 and was buried there in 1631.  The church also contains a wall monument to Thoms Colshill, a 16th century politician.  The churchyard contains the remains of Thoasm Edwards, who received the Victoria Cross for his actions at the Battle of Tamai (fought in 1884 in Sudan).
