The church was opened in November 1874 having been designed by Architect David Thomson of Glasgow. In 1900 a large suite of halls was added as well as the extension and adaptation of the sanctuary to a cruciform layout. The congregation added a modern hall in 1963 and, latterly have installed a lift to allow better access to the upper floor rooms.

The building is traditional sandstone and slate construction. Of particular note are the selection of 6 stained glass windows in the main sanctuary which can seat around 800 persons. A unique Walcker Opus 876 pneumatic pipe organ, in original condition, services the large sanctuary area.
