Barclay Viewforth

This church is named after Mary Barclay who left money for its building, the architect was Frederick T Pilkington and it is considered to be one of his greatest achievements.
The soaring tower brings to mind the architect's inspiration of the Ascension and it does indeed have rather incongruous cathedral like proportions sitting in this Edinburgh suburb. It is of the neo-Perpendicular style.
There is a recessed window in the west end illuminating a dramatic entrance. The layout follows the cruciform design, which is clearly seen. There is much beautiful stone carving and stained glass by Arts and Crafts designers: the painting on the reredos is by William R Lawson and the stained glass by James Ballantine.
At the east end of the church, the architecture is less monumental and there is a lovely, intimate cloister court and a peaceful garden. Look for the carved panel of 'Christ at the well of Samaria' by Alexander Carrick.
