Originally a Congregational Church, it has been the site of a nonconformist church for over 350 years in Stratford although the current building dates from 1878. The original church building was designed by HS Paull FRIBA (1878) including tower and spire with lecture room at rear. It’s opening service was in 1880.

A Congregational Sunday School was added in 1888 and further extended in 1903. Some toilets were added in 1931 and the front boundary wall in 1932. In 1946 lightning struck the spire and it was taken down. The Bear Pit Theatre started using the rear of the church in 2012.
