St David's is a modern church, built in 1963 by PD Hepworth.
A beautiful grade II* church dating back to the 12th century, nestled in the Gwent Levels between the cities of Cardiff and Newport, and famous for featuring in an episode of Dr Who!
Marshfield, Gwent
The original church of St Mary the Virgin was built during the reign of King Stephen (1135), by the Countess Mabel.
Though it has been redeveloped over time, the tower and south entrance are original. The lychgate was added in 1914, and it became a Grade II listed building in January 1963.
More recently the church was used for the filming of Doctor Who, in the christmas special when it was used for Donna's wedding. But you do not have to be a Doctor Who fan to appreciate the beauty of this church and its gardens. The gardens have been made wildlife friendly with wildflower seeds, bird/bat boxes and butterfly/bee houses and there are quiet seating areas to relax and enjoy the view.
The church is currently working with the National Lottery Heritage Fund on a £1.3m programme of restoration and re-imagination.
