Queenborough, Kent
Holy Trinity Queenborough is part of the West Sheppey Benefice and was built in the center of the new town created by Edward 111 in 1368 as a Chapel to Minster Abbey. It is situated about 300yards to the southeast of Queenborough Castle, now just a mound at the front of Queenborough railway station. The church is listed Grade II* as a building of outstanding architectural and historical importance and is open every day for private prayer and visitors.
The church boasts a wealth of history, Hogarth spent part of a riotous journey in Queenborough and Lord Nelson took Holy Communion in the church whilst staying in the town. Incorporated into the church are some exceptional monuments, notably the octagonal font from 1610 with its original Jacobean top and depicting a carving of the castle. Two fine candelabras from 1718 and 1724, a royal coat of arms from 1713 and the Mayoral pew from 1885, also, mounted on the wall the “Whale Tablet” originally a gravestone from 1657. The church has a strong Dutch connection, in recent years being twinned with St Katherines Brielle but notably historically through the large paintings of Moses and Arron which once hung either side of the Altar and the unique painted ceiling believed to be by an unknown Dutch artist around 1698.
The church has a tower of six bells and the views from the tower on a fine day offer wonderful views of the Swale and surrounding area. Today the church is home for our Christian family and a focus for many family occasions in the lives of the community.
We host several outreach social activities within the community and have very recently ended a period of interregnum. With a new priest in charge, we are looking forward to making our long-held vision of a new vestry annex with facilities a reality securing our historic church a place in the future being inclusive and accessible enabling everyone to be able to experience both the historic beauty, the spiritual atmosphere and the word of God safely and in comfort.
