East Grinstead, Sussex
Perched on a hilltop overlooking East Grinstead, St Swithun's has been a landmark of faith, history and community for centuries. Its magnificent 100-foot tower can be seen for miles across the Sussex countryside, welcoming visitors long before they reach its doors.
Although the church has evolved through the centuries, each generation has left its mark while preserving the rich heritage that makes St Swithun's so special today. Inside, you'll discover beautiful stained glass windows that fill the church with colour and light, each telling stories of faith, hope and remembrance. The church also honours the memory of Christian martyrs whose memorials are in the churchyard.
St Swithun's has connections to remarkable people. Among them is John Mason Neale, the celebrated hymn writer best known for giving us the much-loved Christmas carol Good King Wenceslas. The church was also shaped by James Wyatt, the King's Surveyor General and one of Britain's most distinguished architects, whose work contributed to its enduring character and elegance.
Visitors will also find some unexpected delights. Keep an eye out for the charming mice carvings hidden on one of the church doors - a favourite discovery for children and adults alike, adding a touch of fun to a place rich in history.
Whether you come to admire the architecture, explore centuries of local history, enjoy the peaceful setting, or simply take a moment for quiet reflection, St Swithun's offers something for everyone. Standing high above the town, it continues to watch over the town and countryside just as it has for generations, inviting all who visit to discover its stories, its beauty and its enduring spirit.
