St Boniface
Bunbury, Cheshire
Although there has been a church here since Saxon times, much of the story of Bunbury's church revolves around a colourful 14th century knight called Sir Hugh de Calveley.
St Helen’s is located in the centre of Tarporley village and is recognised as a Grade II* listed building.
The church has a rich history with its first documentary evidence dating back to 1287. The architecture features are blend of perpendicular and decorated styles, with notable elements such as a pyramidal spire and Italian gates from the 16th century. The church is known for its significant restorations, including the north and south chapels, and the tower which were completed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The church also holds various historical artefacts, including monuments to notable families and a collection of Cromwellian helmets and armour.
There is a large churchyard within which sits the war memorial In Portland Stone designed by Sir Percy Scott Worthington. The lychgate is also listed as Grade II. There is a ring of eight bells In the tower.
