Built to serve the local farming communities and those on the Gloucester to Sharpness canal, St John's is an attractive little church with beautiful modern stained glass windows and the interior roof is inspired by the upturned hull of a boat.

St John's church in Purton was the result of an appeal to serve the local communities of Purton, Halmore, Hinton, Brookend and Sharpness, launched in October 1873. Just over a year later the church was opened in November 1874, the build had cost the sum of £722. In more recent years, there has been the addition of some quite outstanding stained glass windows over the altar.
