Lower Dunsforth, Yorkshire
St Mary's is listed Grade II and is set between a large former vicarage to the west and the old Schoolhouse to the east, both to designs by the same architects. Both flanking buildings are now private homes. The former vicarage and its outbuildings are Grade II listed and is being carefully restored by its new owners. The Schoolhouse has been materially altered and extended.
The new church replaced a 12th century chapel of ease, which was demolished in 1860. The mouldings of a Norman arch and a corbel are built into the structure of the vestry and its two bells were also incorporated. The original, but now badly damaged, font is now sited next to the nave south wall. The stained glass chancel windows are by Wailes and the clock by Henry Hindley. Recent internal alterations have been completed to provide a flexible use community space at the western end of the nave with up to date essential facilities.
