All Saints

All Saints church in Tattersett is of great significance in both historical and landscape terms. The church is Grade I listed, in recognition of its importance as being nationally significant. It stands in a very isolated rural setting around a mile from the village of Tattersett, and within a few hundred yards of the remains of Coxford Priory. It stands way off the beaten track in the middle of arable and permanent grass fields.

The majority of the nave and chancel belong to the 13th century, but incorporate fabric dating back to the 12th century. Likewise, the 15th century tower appears to be a rebuilding of an earlier structure. All of the evidence of the fabric points to the presence of an early Norman church, much rebuilt over the centuries, and of it being placed in a significant locality. The extant fabric seen today also displays a number of other highly significant features, such as the very rare medieval wall painting of St Erasmus – one of only three to survive from the English Middle Ages – and the late medieval carved and rubbed brickwork in the chancel.

Whilst the church is now one of the most remote in East Anglia, it sits within a historically significant landscape that contains evidence of settlement back to the post-Roman period, which likely influenced the choice of the location for the early church. In 1086 the village was one of the largest in the area, and contained two churches, suggesting links to a pre-Norman monasteria site, and further demonstrating its early significance as a location for worship.
