St Peter & St Paul
Upper Hardres, Kent
A beautiful rural church set in the heart of the beautiful Kent Downs five miles south of Canterbury.
Ancient yew trees, medieval bells, and a rare Georgian interior weave together 1,500 years of history, faith, and community waiting to be discovered in rural Kent.
Stelling Minnis, Kent
Tucked away on the edge of the Kent Downs, St Mary’s in Stelling Minnis is one of those rare places where history, faith, and nature blend into a single story. Step through its gate, and you are entering a landscape shaped by more than 1,500 years of human memory.
The churchyard is home to an ancient yew tree, believed to be around 1,500 years old, older than the church itself, and a living witness to the earliest days of christianity in Kent. Stand beneath its dark branches and you can almost feel the weight of centuries of prayer, joy, and sorrow that it has sheltered.
Inside, the church reveals something unique. Unlike most medieval churches, St Mary’s was never “modernised” in the Victorian era. Instead, it retains an extraordinary 18th century reordering, including a rare three decker pulpit with a sounding board and a gallery overlooking the south aisle. This interior, virtually untouched since the 1790s, gives a vivid glimpse into how worship once sounded and felt, focused on preaching, participation, and clarity of voice.
High in the tower hang three medieval bells, cast in the 14th and 15th centuries, each bearing its own inscription and story. Thanks to a clever Ellacombe apparatus, they can still be chimed by a single person today, so when you hear them ring, you are listening to the same voices that have carried across the Minnis for over 500 years.
The building itself, with its flint and ragstone walls, quiet nave and chancel, and peaceful setting near the Roman Stone Street, tells a layered story: of travellers, villagers, and generations who found here a place of gathering and renewal. Beneath its floor lie traces of graves and earlier foundations uncovered during restoration. silent reminders of those who came before us.
St Mary’s is not just a church; it is a time capsule. Whether you come for its history, its beauty, or its stillness, you will leave with the sense that you have touched something timeless.
