St Peter's church was designed by William Slater of Slater & Carpenter London. The main five bay building was completed 1860. Polished granite pillars hold up a large stencilled hammerbeam roof. The granite theme continues in the pulpit decorated with different coloured marble balls.
The decor is a 2009 reinterpretation of the ornate 19th century interior, revealed under decades of white paint. The seating is plain blackened fixed pews. The choir stalls are more ornate with carvings of the four Gospels. The organ, on four storeys, is one of the finest in Edinburgh. It was rebuilt for the third time in 2010 by Geoffrey Coffin of York.
The main church is augmented with 40 metre tall tower, Narthex and vaulted circular baptistery.
