Designed by Paley and Austin, the church opened on Whit Sunday 1869, and has provided a spacious and friendly place for the community to come and worship for many generations. The notable church organ was originally from the Chapel Royal in St James' Palace, London and played for Queen Victoria wedding to Prince Albert. St James the Great is also the only church in Barrow with a set of 8 fine bells (restored 2014).
